How to choose the right key
The rule is simple: play the pad in the same key as the song. If your chord chart says the song is in G, use the G pad. A pad holds the notes of the key's scale, so it blends under the I, IV, V and vi chords without clashing.
Watch out for capos. If your guitarist plays G shapes with a capo on the 2nd fret, the song actually sounds in A — so you want the A pad. Count the capo fret as half-steps up from the chord shapes to find the real key.
Songs in a minor key work too: use the pad of the relative major. A song in E minor, for example, shares its notes with G major, so the G pad fits. When a set moves from one song to another in a different key, crossfade between the two pads instead of cutting one off.
